Hermann Herzog (1832-1932)

Born in Germany, Herzog spent most of his 100-year life as an artist in the United States. In his early years as an artist, he studied with mentors in Germany and Norway and then attracted such clients as Queen Victoria and Czar Alexander II. He managed to make invest his early earnings wisely, so for the rest of his career he was spared the typical worries of starving artists.
After immigrating to America in the 1860s, he traveled widely throughout the continent, painting American and Mexican landscapes. He had a knack for knowing the best time of day and year to capture a landscape at its most beautiful. He painted realistically, but with an emphasis on mood and beauty.
